Description

The 2010 High School Communications Workshop continues its commitment to provide a challenging and rewarding educational experience for you and your students.  In addition to building a faculty comprised of top instructors from around the country, we have further refined our curriculum to address the needs of both beginning and advanced staff members.  Modifying the track system from last year’s event, we are offering a major course of study along with the choice of two dynamic electives.  The major will provide the appropriate "big picture" tools your students need to carry your publication/production through to successful completion.  The two elective courses -- which will make up about five hours of instructional time -- are designed to address specific strengths and interests.  Staff members will work collectively on their final project so that everyone on your team has ownership of the end result.  New for 2010 is our mentor program in which your staff will be paired with one of our instructors for three, in-depth sessions, part of the daily schedule.

Majors Each participant should register for one major, appropriate for the participant's experience AND skill level.  TIP FOR ADVISERS: Avoid the temptation to group all your staff members together.  Students will have ample opportunity to work together throughout camp.

  • Advanced Yearbook Layout - From grids and guides, to effective color use and sidebar creation.  Learn how to design an award-winning and audience-pleasing publication.
  • Dynamic Yearbook Copy - The text should be as important as the pictures!  From captions and headlines, to the complete feature or sidebar, master the power of the pen.
  • Editorial Leadership - Lead by excellent example!  Student editors will master the art of managing a staff and deadlines while creating a cooperative, fun environment.
  • Newspaper Design - Newspaper design has changed to keep up with the web!  Learn to take effective and contemporary design, and carry it beyond the center spread and into every page of your newspaper.
  • Newspaper Writing Lab (Features) - The heart and soul of the student newspaper.  Discover how to capture the dynamic personalities of your student body and share their unique stories.
  • Newspaper Writing Lab (News & Editorials) - How do you make news interesting when it's already old news?  Learn how to write news stories that are relevant, timely, and interesting to your audience.  Then discover how to pack an opinionated punch on your editorial pages.
  • Media Convergence - As the next step in the evolution of student journalism and technology, media convergence is the process of communicating your story through a powerful combination of print, broadcast, and web-based media.  Explore this team approach which includes print, photography, video, blogging, podcasting, and more.
  • Software Training - Why won't they just leave the software alone.  Learn the latest and greatest in this technology training course led by content masters.  Please designate InDesign or StudioWorks in your SMART track selection.  Photoshop training will be included in both courses.
  • Marketing Makes Your World Go ‘Round - Are your yearbook sales and advertising revenue looking for an economic bail-out?  Learn to boost every money generating aspect of your publications program through effective, exciting, and creative marketing techniques.
  • Photography for the Non-Photographer - If you have to take pictures, write copy, and sell yearbooks, all during lunch, you will find this course ideal for smaller staffs whose members would benefit from an introduction to effective digital photography.  A digital camera is required.
